Decluttering for Safety

Start by removing or relocating items that block walking areas or take up too much floor space.

  • Keep only essential furniture and belongings in each room
  • Store extra items in cabinets or closets so floors remain clear
  • Arrange furniture so there is 36 inches of direct, clear pathways through the room

Key Concerns

Electrical Wires & Cords

  • Never run cords across walkways.  Tape them securely against walls or use cord covers.
  • If possible, have additional outlets installed to reduce extension cords.
  • Keep cords shor and routes safely behind furniture.

  • Remove throw rugs entirely, or replace them with low-provile, rubber backed rugs, that do not slip.
  • If this is not possible, secure rugs with specialized attachments (see suggested product list below)
  • Repair or stretch loose carpets
  • Avoid slippery floor waxes or polishes - use only non-slip finishes recommended for your flooring type.

Furniture Placement

Furniture Placement

  • Arrange furniture so there is a clear path of at least 36 inches (3 feet) wide through all rooms and hallways.
  • Avoid sharp corners or unstable furniture in walking routes.
  • Ensure seating is firm and has arms for easier standing.

Pets

Mobility and Wheelchair Clearances

Furniture Placement

  • Use nightlights or motion lights so you can see pets at night.
  • Keep food and water bowls out of traffic areas.
  • Train pets not to lie in walking paths.

  • Safe walking paths: minimum 36 inches wide.
  • Turning space for a wheelchair or walker: 60 inches (5 feet) in diameter - this allows for full turning without bumping furniture.
  • Ensure transitions between rooms (eg. thresholds) are smooth and level.

Lighting & Visibility
