Personalized Placement

  • Personalize placement for your (or the occupants) height, reach, and strength—custom measurements often ensure comfort and compliance with ADA  or home safety standards.

In the Bathroom

1. Around the Toilet

Horizontal bar (side wall)

  •  Placement: On the wall beside the toilet, 33–36 inches from the floor to the top of the bar.
  • Purpose: Helps with sitting and standing safely.
  • Patient-Specific Tip: The bar should be roughly at  the height of your elbow when sitting.

Vertical bar (near front edge of toilet)

  •  Placement: On the wall in front of slightly to the side of the toilet
  • Purpose: Provides a handhold during standing tasks such as dressing or undressing or toileting (males)
  • Height: the bottom end near seat height (18-20 inches), and top end near 40-42 inches.

Alternative

If walls are not close, consider a floor to ceiling pole or freestanding grab bar

2. Shower or Bathtub Area

Horizontal bar along back wall

  •  Placement: 33–36 inches from the floor.
  • Purpose: Prevents slips when standing or moving within shower or tub.
  • Tip: For deeper tubs, slightly  higher placement (36–38 inches) may feel more secure.

Vertical bar at shower or tub entry

  • Placement: At shower or tub entry, mounted close to entry
  • Height: Extends from about waist height (36inches) up to shoulder height (48 inches)
  • Purpose: Provides steady support when stepping in.

Diagonal bar inside shower (optional)

Generally NOT recommended but may provide variable heights for shared bathrooms where multiple users may need assistance.

3. At the Vanity / Sink

Vertical bar near the outer edge of sink or vanity

  • Placement: Starting at counter height  (~34–36 inches from floor) and extending upward.
  • Purpose: Support while leaning for hygiene tasks or balancing while washing face or brushing teeth.

Tip: A sturdy sink counter (properly anchored) can also serve as a light support surface, but never

Main Entry / Exterior Doors

Vertical bar or floor-to-ceiling pole just inside the door:

Helps with balance when managing door locks, changing shoes, or transitioning to walkers or canes.

Horizontal bar or railing outside at stair entry:

  • Should extend beyond the top  and bottom step by at least 12 inches, at rail height between   34–38 inches.
  • Use both sides of steps if  possible.

Threshold / Door saddles:

  • Consider a small ramp or beveled threshold if higher than 1/2 inches

Bedroom

Vertical pole or “transfer handle” beside bed:

  • Placement: Between edge of bed and nightstand
  • Height: Extends from floor to ceiling.
  • Purpose: Stable handhold for sitting up, standing, or transferring to a wheelchair.
